Conceptual and lexical effects on gestures: the case of vertical spatial metaphors for time in Chinese
The linguistic metaphors of time appear to influence how people gesture about time. This study finds that Chinese English bilinguals produce more vertical gestures when talking about Chinese time references with vertical spatial metaphors than (1) when talking about time conceptions in the English translations, and (2) when talking about Chinese time references with no spatial metaphors. Additi...
متن کاملConceptual Metaphors of the “Self”
The increasing interest in embodied cognition has heightened the need for cognitive models that reflect the relationship of the body with the physical world. Issues of particular interest have to do with the notion of “Self.” According to Lakoff and Johnson (1999), there is no unified way to conceptualize our inner life, as the metaphors we use to understand the Self are intrinsically inconsist...
متن کاملFrom Lexical Semantics to Conceptual Metaphors: Mapping Principle Verification with WordNet and SUMO
The goal of this paper is to further develop methods for verifying Mapping Principles between source and target domain pairings of conceptual metaphors. Previous work (Ahrens, Chung & Huang, 2003) integrated the Conceptual Mapping Model with an ontology-based knowledge representation (i.e. SUMO) in order to demonstrate that conceptual metaphor analysis could be restricted and eventually, automa...
متن کاملHunting Elusive Metaphors Using Lexical Resources
In this paper we propose algorithms to automatically classify sentences into metaphoric or normal usages. Our algorithms only need the WordNet and bigram counts, and does not require training. We present empirical results on a test set derived from the Master Metaphor List. We also discuss issues that make classification of metaphors a tough problem in general.
متن کاملSLAM. Automatic lexical solutions for metaphors
This article presents SLAM, an Automatic Solver for Lexical Metaphors like “déshabiller* une pomme” (to undress* an apple). SLAM calculates a conventional solution for these productions. To carry on it, SLAM has to intersect the paradigmatic axis of the metaphorical verb “déshabiller*”, where “peler” (“to peel”) comes closer, with a syntagmatic axis that comes from a corpus where “peler une pom...
